“Edge of Something” was written in 2018 when Kate lived on Kaua’i while reminiscing about living in New Orleans just a year earlier. She drew immense gratitude on the span of her vast experience from trying to make it as a solo artist on the streets of NOLA, spending the summer in Europe to take a break from her seemingly going nowhere music career, to fully removing herself from the industry chaos to self-isolate on the beautiful island and reflect on life, slow down, mediate, truly tap into her soul where the music really came from, and learn how to produce her own music.
“Feeling on the edge of something great, hope it’s not just a symptom of a manic state.” Having felt like she perhaps had a milder case of bipolar, Kate reflected in the lyrics that her intense solo endeavors and adventurous ambitions were often marked by spurts of what could be manic cycles. Kate has not been diagnosed with bipolar, but instead realized years later that her extreme mood cycles are a result of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).
“Edge of Something” was written one afternoon in her backyard in Princeville underneath a banana tree. The song overall is about reflecting on youth, making mistakes, being okay with those mistakes, and moving on with life in an intentional direction, but having had to aimlessly wander in order to have the emotional and mental ability to know when to slow down and pick a lane.
lyrics
It’s 3 am and im watching the trains roll by
Alone again in the city of sin
Tryin to make do with a pocket of change
Waitin for this heavy to break beneath a tonic and gin
Feelin on the edge of something great
hope it’s not just a symptom of a manic state
Looking for love in all the wrong places
but im enjoying knowing that im coming up
swirling round near Decatur and frenchman
wearing whiskey wings and a dirty grin
Déjà vu, swear ive been here before
So many masks, can’t seem to remember my name
Feelin on the edge of something great
hope it’s not just a symptom of a manic state
Looking for love in all the wrong places
but im enjoying knowing that im coming up
I just wanna know the sunrise
Flowing on beneath the moonshine
Drifting in a sea of lust and restlessness
rising up with smoke of demons
Feeling on the edge of something great
it’s all just a chasm of my honest fate
Looking for sound in all the wrong spaces
But im enjoying knowing that im growing up
